Pole Pole Lodge

The Pole Pole Resort at Mafia Island’s Marine Park is a small and intimate lodge consisting of only seven bungalows and offers personal attention and service.

Pole Pole is located in the Utende area of Mafia Island in a shady, breezy spot facing the sea and looking over at the islands of Chole, Juani and Jibondo.

The lodge is owned and run by a young Italian couple, Massimo and Katia, who have spent the last several years designing and building the resort. The roomy bungalows with wide verandas looking onto the sea are built entirely out of wood and raised on stilts to ensure the maximum comfort for the guests.

Hotel Activities

Pole Pole offers all guests daily excursions including boat trips in traditional sailing dhows, a dive center for Scuba enthusiasts and fantastic snorkeling for those who prefer to stay on the surface
Free day trips are organized to three destinations in Chole Bay, the island’s main attraction - Maweni - Coral rocks emerging from the bay surrounded by an extremely interesting reef which can be reached even by less expert swimmers.
Chole Island - The oldest, still inhabited settlement in the archipelago, with the ruins of some Arab buildings used by the Germans during the First World War.
The island is covered by extremely varied lush vegetation. You can visit a shipyard where traditional construction methods are still used to build dhows, the typical East African sailing boat. Among the island’s curiosities are a number of trees containing colonies of Comoro bats, a protected species of fruit eating "flying foxes"
