There’s no doubt that having lunch at a restaurant and a stint of light shopping in the middle of working harbour can be an amazing experience, particularly on a bright summer’s day when you can watch businessmen, sailors, fishermen and some of Cape Town’s beautiful people drifting past.
It’s also the gateway to one of Cape Town’s two World Heritage sites, Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela and many of the liberation struggle’s heroes were incarcerated.
The other World Heritage site, the Cape Floral Kingdom, is also well worth a visit. It is one of the richest areas for plants in the world, covering a tiny portion of Africa’s landmass, but home to nearly 20% of its flora. Whether you walk, climb or take the cable car, the views from the top of its most famous feature, Table Mountain are pretty good too. You can see most of the peninsula, Table Bay, False Bay and the Cape Flats.

Of course there’s much, much more, nearby. From the open-air market in Greenmarket Square – un-coincidentally close to the Gardens – to the colourful houses of the Bo-Kaap where many of the residents are descendants of the slaves from Indonesia and Malaysia who were brought to the Cape in the 16th and 17th centuries.
So when you’ve been up Table Mountain and ticked off the Waterfront, take a stroll through the city centre; you won’t regret it.
