Camel Walking Safari

From: £2,739

The walking safaris are dedicated to conservation in Kenya and specifically in the particular areas where they operate. Since conservation and people are directly linked, the safaris actively support the communities, by employing local people, paying conservation fees to the communities, and purchasing all local goods whenever possible. The owners of the ranch have supported and encouraged sustainable, traditional honey production for the last seven years, by buying raw honey from the local Samburu amd Laikipia Maasai people and processing it, employing many local people. The locally produced honey is then delivered to markets in Nairobi , allowing the honey gatherers to sell their product to a much larger market.

Begin your safari at Porini Rhino Camp, located in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Porini Rhino Camp is located in Ol Pejeta Conservancy a 90,000 acre wildlife conservancy situated between the foot hills of the Aberdares and the magnificent snowcapped Mount Kenya. Ol Pejeta Conservancy boasts an astounding variety of animals including all the “Big Five” (the endangered black rhino, leopard, elephant, buffalo and lion) as well a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees and also incorporates the smaller Sweetwaters Game Reserve. The combination of amazing wildlife and stunning views across the open plains of Ol Pejeta guarantees an unforgettable safari experience.

After the camel walking, continue onto Porini Lion Camp. Porini Lion Camp is located in the exclusive 20,000 acre Olare Orok Conservancy. This expansive conservancy, which borders the Masai Mara Game Reserve is home to an abundance of animals including the Big Cats for which the Mara is famous.

Day 1
On arrival into Nairobi, you will be met & transferred to Wilson Airport for your flight to Nanyuki. You will be met at the airstrip and transferred to Porini Rhino Camp, located in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Lunch and afternoon tea in camp and then head off to look for rhino with your driver-guide in the camp’s 4x4 safari vehicle. Return to Porini Rhino Camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 2
Full day in Ol Pejeta with game drives and walking activities from camp and a night game drive after dinner. Overnight Porini Rhino Camp.
Day 3
This morning you will be collected from Porini Rhino Camp and taken to the start of the safari. The drive is about 2 hours through pretty countryside, hopefully seeing some wildlife along the way.
Nayasura Camp / Tumaren
A beautiful outcrop of stone overshadows the camp and you will have seen the feature from miles as you approached in the vehicle. The local Laikipia Maasai call these rocks Nayasura and stone chippings suggest that they have been used as a camp for millennia.
After lunch you will head out on a short walk looking for game and getting a feel for the country. As the sun begins to set we will find ourselves at the crest of Nayasura with drinks and bitings watching the baboons come back to roost on the face of the rock.
Day 4
Nyarara Camp
From Nayasura we will head out early after breakfast so to see as much game as possible on our walk north towards Nyarara Camp. Nyarara means Cheetah in Maasai and the camp was given this name because of a large male that has been seen in the area.
Along our walk we will walk across plains as well as mixed bush. Herds of Zebra, Oryx and Grant’s gazelle predominate on the large plains with smaller numbers of Jackson’s Hartebeest and Thompson’s Gazelle. In the mixed bush we find Dikdiks, Gerenuk, Impala and Lesser Kudu if we are lucky enough to see them.
The pack camels with the camp will have made a more direct route than us and so they will have arrived and set up most of camp before our arrival. After lunch we will follow our routine of resting, reading or badminton for the energetic and later another walk in the evening to a pretty spot for sundowners.
Day 5
Tumaren Ewaso Camp
Today we will be heading down toward the Ewaso Nyiro River, which runs along the eastern edge of the Laikipia Plateau and then turns eastward toward Samburu National Reserve. Along the way we will be looking for Eland, Steinbuck, Giraffe, Waterbuck, Grevy Zebra as well as all the tough-to-see predators such as Wild Dog, Hyena, Lion, Leopard or Cheetah. We will spend the afternoon by the river and swimming and fishing before an evening walk to a sundowner spot looking towards Mt. Kenya.
Day 6
After breakfast you will be driven to Nanyuki in time for your onward flight to the Maasai Mara. You’ll be met at the airstrip by your safari guide from Lion Camp in open-sided 4x4 safari vehicle and will immediately be “on safari” in the Mara. Enjoy the day in the Mara with a picnic lunch on the look out for the Big Cats. Then drive to Lion Camp and settle into your tent. Afternoon game drive, followed by a sundowner at a scenic point. Return to camp for a shower, dinner and overnight.
Day 7
Awake at dawn to the natural sounds of Masai Mara’s birdlife. After early morning tea you will have a game drive in the conservancy on the lookout for the Big Five! Return to camp for breakfast followed by a morning nature walk across the plains escorted by Maasai warriors returning for lunch. In the afternoon you will go on a game drive in Olare Orok Conservancy, stopping for a sundowner at a scenic viewpoint, followed by a night game drive to look for nocturnal animals. Return to camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 8
Early morning walk in the Conservancy with Maasai warriors, followed by breakfast. Then depart on the flight back to Nairobi You will be met on arrival & transfer to airport to connect onto your flight back to UK (or extend your holiday down to the Kenya Coast)
